ARM CEO fears artificial intelligence
According to Rene Haas, Chief Executive Officer of ARM Holdings, 70% of the world’s population somehow touches ARM-designed products. However, Haas states that even though he manages one of the most important companies in technology, artificial intelligence keeps him up at night. “What I’m most worried about is people losing control over machines,” Haas said in an interview with Bloomberg.
According to the ARM boss, we need a backdoor or something like that to be able to shut down the system. While Haas considers the potential disadvantages of artificial intelligence, he wants the company to be in a strong position in the artificial intelligence revolution, just as it is in semiconductors, in ARM’s next era.
Haas, who became CEO in February last year, is trying to reduce ARM’s dependence on the shrinking smartphone industry by moving its technology into areas such as personal computers, servers and electric vehicles. ARM also aims to generate more revenue per device sold by offering more complete designs to phone customers. My firm’s instruction sets are embedded in the processors that power nearly all of the 1.4 billion smartphones sold each year, and more than 99% use Arm designs or technology.
“It will change everything in the next five to ten years,” according to ARM CEO. The company now sees a huge opportunity in cloud data centers (ChatGPT and Bard operate there) and is targeting a 50% market share globally in the coming years. The CEO also said that leading names in technology walk a very thin line these days, adding, “10 years ago, CEOs did not talk to government officials as often as we do today.”
