The dessert-themed “Upside Down Cake” codename for Android 14 was first revealed to the public a short while ago. While Android 14 won’t be released for a while, the reveal of the Android 15 codename suggests that Google is already working on the 2024 version of the operating system. It was announced that the codename of Android 15 is “Vanilla Ice Cream” and the announcement came a little earlier than usual.
This announcement was made by Mishaal Rahman on Twitter and the codename “Vanilla Ice Cream” can be seen in AOSP (Android Open Source Project) as a series of code changes in the Android Trade Federation (Tradefed/TF). However, since Android 15 is not expected to be released until late next year, no details about the new features are known yet.
Android has a long history of naming its major updates after sweets in alphabetical order. Android 14 operating system, codenamed “Upside Down Cake”, will be released by Google later this year.
Of course, Android’s sweet-themed codenames don’t mean much to the end user. Still, it remains a sweet memory of Android’s early days, even when we dismiss all the beautiful statues erected on the Google campus to celebrate the start of every major Android update.
