Short video platform TikTok is facing a new crisis because of the girl who lost her life while shooting a challenge video. The family, who claimed that the 9-year-old girl drowned while performing a “blackout challenge”, said that they filed a lawsuit against TikTok.
There is a ‘blackout challenge’ crisis on TikTok
Another person died because of the challenges in the popular short video application TikTok. 9-year-old Arriani Jaileen Arroyo allegedly choked herself to death while filming. Father Heriberto Arroyo reported that when he entered the room, the boy was motionless and took a TikTok video.
In the latest lawsuit against TikTok, it was said that some rules were ignored. For example, people under the age of 13 are prohibited by law from using TikTok. But the children in all of the recent deaths were younger than 13 years old.
In addition, the family, who said that the platform algorithm deliberately brought the ‘blackout challenge’ videos to the fore, believes that their children lost their lives while trying this challenge. The following statements were included in the case file:
TikTok specifically curated the Blackout Challenge videos and determined that videos featuring users choking themselves to unconsciousness are suitable for young children.
According to the lawsuit, TikTok encourages young users to use social media and watch videos designed to grab their attention more. The 9-year-old girl’s father said that TikTok was touted as a family-oriented social media app, while in reality it was the opposite.
Despite being a tragic event, this isn’t the first child to die while filming a TikTok video. We have seen before that there were children under the age of 13 who drowned themselves while trying to do the ‘blackout challenge’ again. Let us remind you that separate lawsuits have been filed for these children as well.
