Is rain water drink? Natural resource or danger?

Half a century ago, the dangers hidden in the atmosphere began to drag the whole world into a scary nightmare. Acid rains became the symbol of uncontrolled industrialization, destroying the forests in Europe, collapsing sea ecosystems in North America and seriously threatened human health. However, today, although not as visible as acid rains, humanity faces a much greater and hidden problem: PFAS (Per- and polyfluoroalkil substances), the other “Endless chemicals.”

In fact, we have published a detailed article on this subject before. At this point, “Is rain water drink?” The answer to the question emerges. Although rain water seems to be a pure source offered by nature, its drinkability depends on various factors. It can be theoretically quite pure when it falls from a clean atmosphere, but it should not be forgotten that the atmosphere is full of pollutants in the modern world. So nowadays drinking rain water will not be a good choice.

Potential Dangers of Drinking Rain Water

  • Air pollution and chemicals: Collects the substances in the atmosphere of rain water. It has the potential to contain harmful substances such as rain and acid rains in industrialized regions. In addition, pesticide, heavy metal and chemical residues may also be mixed with water.
  • PFAS and Microplastics: Today, “infinite chemicals” (PFAS) and germs can be found in the content of rainwater. These substances are chemicals that can be harmful to health and are very difficult to remove from water.
  • Bacteria and microorganisms: Rain water accumulated on roofs or open areas may be exposed to microorganisms and bacteria. This can make water risky for health.

Nevertheless, it is possible to make rain water drinkable. But for this, rain water must be processed using filtration or reverse osmosis systems.

Although it may seem risky to drink rain water, it may become safe if it is filtered correctly. However, it is usually seen as a more practical and safe option for irrigation, cleaning or agricultural uses.
