Sony officially revealed all the details about the upcoming PlayStation VR2 (PS VR2) title, including its features and availability information, back in November last year. However, it was a disappointment for many to learn that the new hardware will sell for $549, which is even higher than a PlayStation 5.
Apparently, this disappointment was reflected in the pre-order numbers, causing Sony to significantly lower its initial sales forecasts.
Sources close to the matter state that the PS VR2 title’s distribution estimate has been slashed to roughly one million units. While this number may seem very high, it represents a significant drop from the two million units Sony was initially expecting.

It is also alleged that Sony has informed a supply chain partner that it expects lower orders for PS VR2 display panels. In fact, only 1.5 million shipments are expected between April 2023 and March 2024. Still, these numbers may vary slightly depending on the reaction from the consumer market.
VR technology has yet to go mainstream, and barriers such as high cost make it hard to go mainstream. The VR headset market is currently dominated by Meta with Quest 2 with 85% market share. It looks like Sony won’t be directly challenging its established rivals, given the PS VR2’s price and PlayStation 5 exclusive.
We’ll be able to see more clearly what kind of competition it will offer when the title launches on February 22.
