When we look at models such as 2025 Opel Frontera and 2025 Citroën C3 Aircross, we can no longer find the screen in the middle panel.
Are there any other reasons under the cost? What kind of logic is there behind this decision?
How much is the cost of multimedia screens for manufacturers?
As technology develops and touching screens in our lives, multimedia screens became a prestige element for automobile manufacturers, but on the other hand, this means cost.
Although the cost of the screen changes in the usual size, resolution and technology, the cost of a high-resolution screen to the manufacturer can vary in the middle of $ 100-300.
The only problem is not the screen. A complex system is created with software, processor, relationship technologies and user interface design. As the software development process increases, costs increase, software engineers, designs and test groups are also in this cost pen.
One of the most valuable reasons is increasing the attention of the driver.
Large screens distract the drivers’ attention, which means danger in traffic. In particular, touch screens cause users to separate their eyes from the road while driving. Therefore, the manufacturers eliminate screens to reduce the risk and turn many touch functions in the car, including multimedia screens, into physical buttons.
In addition to multimedia screens, you can examine how and why the return to physical buttons is applied in our concern.
When the issue is security, official authorities also come into play. EURO NCAP has issued test rules for manufacturers who want to earn the highest safety points, and for this, there should be less displays and more buttons in cars.
How much does it distribute attention?
A study was done with 44 individuals using the Peugeot 5008. It was revealed that the drivers should look at the multimedia screens for 15.7 seconds to write the address. 10-11 seconds were spent to choose music and change the radio. To adjust the vehicle temperature, the sealing of the screen was 3.4 seconds.
Although the time is shorter than the task, the drivers are separated from the road by looking at the multimedia screen.
User feedback is also taken into consideration.
Although some of them are convenience, the touch screen for a number of drivers is not practical. Touching the screen while moving can be more difficult than physical buttons. For this reason, manufacturers can decide to remove screens, taking into account user feedback.
Is there a logic of this decision?
The decision to remove multimedia screens may seem strange at first glance. If we leave the cost aside, we cannot say unreasonable when we think about security.
Already in accordance with the screens in our lives when we think that at least in traffic to be so strict joke to us and other drivers is a logical decision.
But it is difficult to say that this will be accepted by everyone. In particular, technology enthusiasts and customers in the luxury segment are waiting to see large and advanced screens in their vehicles. Therefore, it stands for manufacturers to develop different strategies for different segments.
Perhaps we will meet completely different technologies instead of screens in the future, who knows?
