Fall Guys and Netflix’s Squid Game
A recent Techradar interview with Fall Guys lead game designer Joe Walsh on this subject showed that Netflix’s hit series is also on the minds of the developers at Mediatonic. This topic came up during the interview when Walsh was asked if he had any ideas for episodes that didn’t materialize in Fall Guys.
“Yeah, there’s definitely a lot,” Walsh replied, and added: “One of the ones that came out recently is Squid Game, the biggest TV show in the world right now. And something we’re dealing with, Red Light, opens with Green Light. And we’ve never prototyped it. We couldn’t create it because we couldn’t get it right in our minds how it works.”
It’s easy to understand why the Fall Guys’ concept of the Squid Game never appeared. Most parts of the game are incredibly kinetic and the player characters are in constant motion. In addition to the fact that Fall Guys’ bean-shaped candies carry themselves wobbly, opponents can be caught and blocked at will, making a Red Light/Green Light setup nearly impossible.
But Walsh hasn’t given up yet, and despite the problems it entails, he makes it clear that the concept is not entirely improbable: “There’s something (interesting) about motion in a video game, it’s hard to stay still in real life. But in a video game, you just have to put the joystick down. And At the time, I thought we were like, ‘We’re never going to do Red Light Green Light, that doesn’t make sense.’ But seeing how popular Squid Game is now, I’d love to take another look at something like that and see if we can do it in Fall Guys.”
Of course, the more important question at this point is how much fun this kind of game will be. While it’s easy to see Walsh’s comments as an attempt to follow any new trend like Squid Game, as he mentioned, the team has had a Red Light/Green Light style episode in their heads before.

Considering that Fall Guys is a game based on knowing when and how to act in general, this concept based on when not to act can be quite impressive. Of course, a solution may need to be found for the “just let go of the control lever” situation that the two Walshs themselves are talking about.
Of course, it’s also worth noting that Walsh’s remarks aren’t a confirmation that the team is working on a Squid Game-like Red Light/Green Light episode for Fall Guys. However, the team seems willing to examine this idea once again.
