According to local media reports, authorities in Iran have closed more than 8,000 underground facilities for mining cryptocurrencies in the past three years. The country continues to take steps against illegal mining.
Iran Shut Down More Than 8 Thousand Illegal Mining Companies in 3 Years
According to Iran’s English-language Financial Tribune and Bargh News portal, companies that illegally minted cryptocurrencies in Iran have stolen 1.8 billion kilowatt-hours (KWh) of electricity, according to an electricity industry spokesperson.
Mostafa Rajabi-Mashhadi used the following statements in his statements on the subject:
“Over the past three years, approximately 8,200 unauthorized cryptocurrency mining centers have been identified and shut down, with more than 246,000 active miners using 680 megawatts (MW) of energy.”
Most electricity theft occurred in the provinces of Isfahan and Tehran, followed by Khorasan Razavi, Khuzestan, Markazi, Fars and East Azerbaijan. The reports stated that the government wanted to support the activities of licensed miners by putting pressure on illegal mining activities.
In July 2022, Iran’s Power Generation, Transmission and Distribution Corporation (Tavanir) pledged to take drastic measures against unlicensed crypto miners.
