Every year, Apple includes a more powerful processor and much more advanced cameras in its iPhone series. However, it has been using a 3x optical zoom sensor for years. This situation seems to change with the iPhone 16. New leaks have revealed that a 120mm optical zoom exclusive to Apple has been produced.
Good news about 120mm optical zoom for the iPhone 16 Pro camera
Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo made new claims about the cameras of the iPhone 16 series, which will be released next year. This supported previous leaks that Pro models would see a significant camera upgrade.
According to Kuo, Apple is working on much more powerful zoom capabilities compared to the 3x optical zoom found on the iPhone 15 Pro models. Accordingly, it is possible for the company to switch to the 120mm optical zoom feature with the iPhone 16 series. It is said that Apple will use a quad periscope zoom lens.
It is planned to use multiple lenses and mirrors to achieve extended zoom range on a single sensor. The quad design is being developed specifically for Apple by Taiwanese lens manufacturer Largan.
Kuo revealed that the quad lens Largan produced for Apple managed to increase camera efficiency from 40 percent to 70 percent. This could mean that iPhone 16 Pro shipments increase by 160 percent on an annual basis.
Kuo also claimed that Huawei will use Largan’s periscope zoom lenses in 2024. The analyst wants to increase shipments of the Chinese manufacturer’s P70 series with periscope camera by 100 percent on an annual basis. It seems that both Apple and Huawei have started to pay more attention to the telephoto lens in the premium segment.
