As you know, the Lightning port on the iPhone 14 series or previous generations required some certificates. Cables and accessories that did not have these certificates either did not work at all or full features could not be used. With the iPhone 15 series, Apple is switching to the Type C port, which is standard in the Android community, but again, cables and accessories will be special.

Apple’s iPhone 15 series will only support USB-C accessories that have been officially approved by Apple’s own Made for iPhone (MFi) program, potentially limiting the functionality of accessories not certified by Apple.

iPhone 15 charging cables will be certified

Since its launch in 2012, first-party and MFi-certified Lightning ports and connectors have included a small integrated circuit that confirms the authenticity of the parts included in the connection. For example, when using third-party charging cables that are not MFi-certified, connected Apple devices would display “This accessory is not supported”.

It is strongly claimed that Apple will replace the Lightning port with USB C / Type C in iPhone 15 models, which has already become a necessity for Europe. New reports from China say that despite USB, Apple will continue to use a Lightning-like authentication chip. In the meantime, let’s also say that the new generation iPads with USB C port do not have such a limitation or a chip.

Charging speed of non-certified cables will be limited

In addition, ShrimpApplePro, known for Apple leaks, reported that Foxconn has started mass production of MFi-certified USB C accessories. The authentication chip encourages customers to purchase genuine iPhone peripherals, while Apple charges a commission for MFi-approved accessories. The MFi program also makes it easy to detect counterfeit and potentially dangerous accessories.

While these benefits may sound nice, ShrimpApplePro claims that Apple will software-limit data transfer and charging speed on non-MFi certified accessories. According to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the USB C port on the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus will be limited to Lightning/USB 2.0 speeds, while higher transfer speeds will be exclusive to the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max models.
