Apple introduced the iPhone 15 and many other new devices at the Wonderlust event yesterday. Undoubtedly, iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max were the stars of the night. Apple continues to surprise us as always. NavIC, developed as an alternative to India’s GPS system, has expanded its support to iPhone 15 models.
Apple gets NavIC support on iPhone models for the first time!
In 2018, India took action to create an independent satellite system. This initiative is quite bold for India. Because their competitors are quite strong. All world giants, especially America, use their own systems. India’s space research agency ISRO has developed NavIC. NavIC provides accurate positioning and timing information over India and surrounding region. Moreover, NavIC covers the entire land area of India through more than half a dozen satellites.
So what activities is NavIC used for? It is used for transportation and location-based services, including land, air and sea. It also provides survey and geodesy, scientific research, time distribution and synchronization support. It also includes the publication of life safety warnings.
ISRO has collaborated with Qualcomm to integrate NavIC navigation technology into mobile chipsets. But now the space agency in India has achieved a new success. By working with Apple for the new A17 Pro chipset, it was able to integrate NavIC into the new iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max models.
On the technical specifications page of the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, Apple says that the new models support NavIC. Thus, Apple added NavIC support to an iPhone model for the first time. However, the company did not specify which features would be included in the distribution. Additionally, this support only covers these two models for now. According to the official specifications, the standard iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus variants do not support NavIC.
So which phones other than iPhone can use NavIC? A few models other than Apple can also use this positioning system. A large number of smartphones support NavIC, including Xiaomi Mi 11X, 11T Pro, OnePlus Nord 2T and Realme 9 Pro.
