According to the statement of supply chain analyst Kuo, there are difficulties in the production of the tetraprism lens system of the iPhone 15 Pro Max. Apple also requested changes to the technical specifications of the camera system.

Difficulties in tetraprism camera lens production

Kuo said that the iPhone 15 Pro Max’s tetraprism camera module, which provides up to 5x optical zoom, is the most significant supply bottleneck. In response, Apple has upgraded the features of the tetraprism lens provided by Largan Precision to compensate for this, he said. Due to the sudden increase in lens requirements and the urgency created by intense demand, Largan expanded the production lines of tetraprism lenses. New challenges and the need for more resources increased the unit price of the lens by 20%, but Apple didn’t mind, partly because of the relatively low cost of defective lenses, partly because of Largan’s reputation and ability to produce top-notch products.

Largan’s inability to meet demand for the new specifications could lead to delays in shipping the iPhone 15 Pro Max to retailers and consumers. In addition to the camera-related bottleneck, the fact that the 15 Pro Max entered mass production later than other models is another factor that causes the delivery time to increase.

The tetraprism lens is exclusive to the iPhone 15 Pro Max, increasing the optical zoom of the telephoto camera from 3x to 5x and increasing the maximum zoom to 25x. The iPhone 15 Pro uses a more typical telephoto camera setup.
