Before graduating, Brigham Young University students decided to take a trip to Utah’s San Rafael Swell Recreation area, which is filled with canyons and other geological formations. They read that there is a canyon in the region and they wanted to check it because they have been canyoning for about a year. However, they got into trouble after they got into a deep, cold pool during their trip. Because it is known that during this time of the year, Utah gets extra rain and the canyons are places where the sun cools down rapidly. For this reason, students report that they are exposed to severe hypothermia. Although the students had blankets and materials to make a fire, they did not have enough equipment to get them out of the area they entered.
The thing that saved the students from this difficult situation was the iPhone 14. Roughly every 20 minutes, a satellite aligns with the students’ positions in the canyon. Using this feature, students sent a message to 911 and shared their location. A short time later, emergency responders rescued the students by helicopter.The iPhone 14’s Emergency SOS feature has helped save dozens of lives so far. Emergency SOS, in short, is a feature that allows people to contact emergency services using a satellite link.
