With the launch of the Apple iPhone 14, one of the company’s newest features was introduced: Emergency SOS. Emergency Assistance allows you to connect to emergency services via a satellite connection instead of cellular data or wifi that is unavailable in remote areas.

It is this feature that saved a man who went missing in the wilderness of Alaska last week. MacRumors reports that a man traveling by snowmobile from Noorvik to Kotzebue is stranded in the Alaskan wilderness and has activated the Emergency Assistance feature on his iPhone. Local search and rescue teams worked with Apple’s Emergency Response Center to locate the man and take him to safety in Kotzebue. The man suffered no reported injuries, according to a post from the Alaska State Police Department of Public Safety.

It was fortunate that after the man disappeared into the wild, he was able to immediately contact Apple and the authorities. According to the National Weather Service, the average temperature in the Kotzebue area was about minus 7 degrees Celsius last week, and a winter storm warning was issued for the area.

The fact that Apple technology works and potentially saves someone’s life can be considered a great success story. Allegations are that some major Android manufacturers, such as Samsung, will somehow bring satellite connectivity to their new phones.
