How do iPhone 14 and Apple Watch 8 detect a traffic accident?

All iPhone 14 models and Apple Watch 8 have traffic accident detection. With the new dual-core accelerometer that can detect up to 256G G-force measurements, and the new high-dynamic-range gyroscope, iPhone can detect car crashes with its crash detection feature. If the user is unconscious or unable to reach the iPhone, the device automatically calls emergency services. Apple Watch 8 can also detect car crashes thanks to a new three-axis gyroscope and high g-force accelerometer that samples data four times faster than the previous generation.

Apple says that the Watch Series 8, which uses an algorithm that works on the device together with the barometer, can detect collisions and automatically notify emergency contacts and services if the user does not respond within 10 seconds. In addition to motion data, barometer, GPS and microphone are used to determine whether a serious accident has occurred or not. In the event of a serious accident, the emergency service call screen appears first on the Apple Watch, considering that the user can reach it more easily. If the iPhone is nearby, the call is made over the phone.

How were the crash tests carried out?

Apple said that to create its traffic accident detection algorithm, they simulated common real-life accidents, including head-on collisions, back-hits, and rollovers, in a professional crash-tested area. It was stated that the motion algorithms designed by Apple were developed with 1 million hours of real driving and crash log data.
