The iPhone 14 Pro’s 48-megapixel camera is expected to be used on the Apple iPhone 15, and thus the phone is expected to reach the same level as its rivals such as Google and Samsung. This expectation is supported by renowned Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who came to the same conclusion after months of reports and speculation from other sources.

According to Ming-Chi Kuo, “The wide camera CIS [camera image sensor] of the two non-Pro iPhone 15 models will be upgraded to 48MP and feature a new stacked CIS design. Due to the low throughput, Sony increased Apple’s CIS production capacity by 100-120% to meet Apple’s demand, resulting in a significant reduction in the supply of premium CIS for Android.”

Alongside other iPhone 15 camera predictions, an earlier report from Wedbush analysts had claimed that Apple would make the switch and not let the company’s best-selling iPhones wait any longer on 12MP cameras.

Although the company has historically used 12 MP sensors on all its top iPhones for years, Apple’s iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max phones were the first iPhones to use a high-resolution 48 MP sensor in 2022. This meant that the company could compete more effectively with the best Android phones.

Apple’s iPhone 15 generation is expected to differentiate its more expensive Pro models from standard iPhones by using periscope lenses, although the new rumor means cheaper iPhones will also join this high-resolution camera switch.

The iPhone 14 camera is one of the best smartphone cameras you can buy. But at least on paper, it looks like it will hardly compete with most of the best cheap phones. These phones are usually equipped with cameras with a high megapixel count, and some can go up to 200 MP.

While the number of megapixels isn’t the only thing that matters in determining the quality of the photos a camera can capture, if that number is too low, it can mean you quickly fall behind in the minds of buyers. Even Google, which often resembles Apple in keeping the specs low, which is adequate, has started using a 64MP sensor for the Google Pixel 7a. So it’s not surprising that Apple, with its very good marketing know-how, is heading towards similarly high numbers.
