Apple has released the iOS 16.6.1 update to fix a critical vulnerability in iOS 16 that could allow attackers to remotely install spyware on a device without any interaction from iPhone users. Experts recommend installing the relevant update.

iOS 16.6.1 update is released to prevent critical vulnerability

Pegasus spyware, developed by NGO Group, was used a while ago to install it on the iPhone of an employee of a non-governmental organization. The device infected with the spyware can send almost all information to the attacker, including photos, messages and audio/video recordings. Apple released iOS 16.6.1 just a few days after the discovery of this vulnerability.

It is very important for iPhone owners to install this update even if they are not likely to be targeted with spyware. There are many groups looking to reverse engineer iOS security updates to discover how to exploit this new vulnerability, increasing the risk of broader attacks.

Citizen Lab, which discovered the vulnerability and immediately reported it to Apple, did not provide a full breakdown of the vulnerability for obvious reasons, but the vulnerability involves PassKit — the framework behind Apple Pay and Wallet — attachments loaded with malicious images sent via iMessage. Along with iOS 16.6.1, the iPadOS 16.6.1 update, which closes the same vulnerability, was also released. Relevant updates are available for download for iPhone 8 and above, iPad Pro (all models), iPad Air 3rd generation and above, iPad 5th generation and above, and iPad mini 5th generation and above.
