Although Microsoft says it has completely abandoned Internet Explorer, it offers an “Internet Explorer mode” in its Chromium-based Edge browser. This mod exists to allow website developers to observe how their pages look on older systems.

Microsoft has released a new tool to help developers make legacy websites and apps work in Chromium-based Edge with Internet Explorer mode. Internet Explorer 11 will continue to be a component of Windows 10 until June 15, 2022, after which support will be removed in some versions of Windows 10. That’s why the published tool is important for developers.

IE mode in Edge can be used for backward compatibility with legacy business applications and internal sites. Microsoft said last year that IE mode in Microsoft Edge will be supported until at least 2029 to give web developers eight years to modernize legacy apps and eventually eliminate the need for IE mode.

Administrators can now use the Internet Explorer Driver, a server for automatic testing of IE mode provided by the Selenium Project, to test these sites with IE mode. The driver supports JavaScript and can be downloaded from the Selenium project.

“To prepare for June 15, you can now use the Internet Explorer Driver to verify that IE mode is the right solution for your business-critical legacy websites or applications,” says Zoher Ghadyali from Microsoft in a blog post.

“With just a few changes to an existing test that runs against Internet Explorer, you can run your tests in Edge in Internet Explorer (IE) mode,” adds Ghadyali.

Selenium explains, “The Microsoft Edge team is committed to supporting IE Mode in Edge until 2029, when support for Windows 10 will be removed.”

Microsoft said that support will last until 2029, giving software developers ample time to complete their work. Meanwhile, Internet Explorer support has been removed from all Microsoft 365 apps. Google also stopped supporting Internet Explorer in 2021. Internet Explorer users (who still stubbornly use Internet Explorer) have to use Microsoft’s Bing service for searching.
