After the invasion of Ukraine, it is wondered how far the embargoes, which means the isolation of Russia from the world, will go. In Russia, where social media and content giants pull the plug, questions have begun to be asked when internet access will be cut off.
Will internet access be cut off in Russia?
It is often said that the Internet is a free environment and cannot be blocked, but it is not so. From cable providers to backbone structures, from equipment manufacturers to service providers, we can say that it is actually in the hands of companies or governments. However, the restrictions are not far away.
Netflix, PayPal and TikTok; Russia ceased operations
In the embargoes applied to Russia, almost all kinds of interaction except internet access were terminated. Finally, a request was made to the ICANN organization to block Russian domain names, and it was rejected, answering that it would be a disaster.
Now, the Cogent backbone provider, which controls 25 percent of internet traffic, has decided to cut off relations with Russian businesses. Previously, data from Russia Today and Sputnik channels were cut. Apart from this, it is stated that incoming and outgoing data from standard users will not be interrupted.
The decision will affect giant internet providers such as Rostelcom, Megafon and Veon. This means that the internet slows down in the country. As always, there are criticisms that these decisions are punishments for innocent Russian citizens and the opportunity to receive free information will be completely restricted.
