Beware of chat apps
Researchers discovered a vulnerability in chat apps that would detect a person’s location with 80 percent accuracy. By recording the time when this clear message reaches the person, an algorithm is created and the location is determined.
The delivery of the sent message to the person requires special characteristics between internet networks and application servers. It is also thanks to the open that algorithms analyze these signal paths and find the location. The algorithm detects the location by sending messages repeatedly. For this, the person needs to know the other person and be messaging.
The research was carried out in WhatsApp, Signal, Threema applications. WhatsApp has 2 billion users, while Signal has 40 million and Threema has 10 million. It was determined that the vulnerability reached 82 percent accuracy in Signal, 80 percent in Threema, and 74 percent in WhatsApp. Since it is open server-side, it is not known what action will be taken for now.
