With a population of at least 144 million, Russia has approximately 110 million social media users. Social media giants Facebook and Twitter, which have taken a stance against the Putin administration in the Ukraine-Russia war that has been going on for two weeks, and have imposed various sanctions on the Russian media, have been banned in the country recently.
Twitter then found a rather unconventional solution to censorship, as Russia saw a phenomenal increase in demand for VPN software that allows access to blocked sites. The social media company has launched the onion extension web version, which can be accessed through the Tor network.
Twitter launches onion service
The Twitter onion service can be accessed via the link https://twitter3e4tixl4xyajtrzo62zg5vztmjuricljdp2c5kshju4avyoid.onion via a browser that supports the Tor network. Alec Muffett, software engineer who took part in the development of the service, said in his statement on the subject:
I am sharing the most important tweet for me and long awaited tweet. On behalf of Twitter, I am happy to announce the new Tor onion service.
While Twitter’s usual website is also currently accessible via the Tor network Thanks to the new version, users living in countries where the social media platform is banned will be able to enter Twitter without being censored.
In his tweet, Alec Muffett said that he has been considering the idea of developing a special version of Twitter’s onion since 2014.
Onion is often used to conduct illegal activities on the Dark Web. One of the main reasons for this is; With this domain name, it is possible to prevent user tracking by encrypting the connection traffic between the server and the computer. Onion sites cannot be accessed with DNS connection provided by internet service providers and with known browsers such as Chrome and Firefox.
