Nowadays, a person who wants to buy a smartphone has two options: Android and iPhone. While there are hundreds of products from brands such as Samsung, Xiaomi and OPPO on the Android side, on the other side, only Apple’s iPhone is available.

When the competition between the two parties is great, various comparisons such as which one is better are never missing. The last example of this was seen recently. So much so that a new report says, “Do iPhone or Android users spend more on mobile apps?” answered the question.

App Store revenues are many times higher than Play Store

According to the report by Horace Dediu of Finnish software company Asymco, iPhone users spend 7.4 times more money for mobile applications compared to Android users.

The source of the research, Dediu, said that 10 years ago, he learned important information about monetization from software developers who developed applications for both iOS and Android platforms. Accordingly, while the number of Android users was 2 times more than iOS at that time, developers were generating approximately twice as much income from the App Store compared to the Play Store.

Today, Apple says there are 650 million active users for the App Store, and Google says there are 2.5 billion active users for the Play Store. Accordingly, in 2023, Android users will be four times more than Apple users. But when it comes to the money part, unfortunately Android cannot show this excess. According to the source, the ratio between Play Store and App Store revenues has remained almost the same since 2016.

Here are the Play Store and App Store revenues for developers by year;

Year App Store Revenue (dollars) Play Store Revenue (dollars)
2016: 29 billion 15 billion
2017: 37.5 billion 20 billion
2018: 48 billion 23 billion
2019: 55 billion 31 billion
2020: 66 billion 38 billion
2021: 73 billion 48 billion
2022: 81 billion 42 billion

According to the revenue data shared by the source, as you can see above, the revenue of the Android application store Play Store decreased for developers in 2022, while the App Store continued its rise.

Vision Pro, the mixed reality glasses that Apple introduced this year, can increase App Store revenues. Because the company offered an SDK (Software Development Kit) for application developers. In other words, we may encounter paid applications that bring various features in the future.
