Sony is preparing to deliver the first units of PlayStation 5 Pro to consumers on November 7. You might be thinking that the company recently decided to plan and produce the new $700 PS5 version, but you’d be wrong.
PlayStation bosses claim that they started preparing the PS5 Pro even before the first PS5 was released in 2020. “PlayStation 5 Pro was in development even before the original PS5 was released,” Sony Interactive co-CEO Hideaki Nishino said in a new interview published Thursday. Nishino was a product manager when Sony launched its first PS5 models in 2020, so he knows better than anyone what was done at that time.
What will PS5 Pro offer?
Nishino said “we were debating whether we wanted to make another Pro. But the point is, we saw that in three years or five years, technologies will emerge that will take PS5 further.”
With the PS5 Pro, Sony will offer a more powerful GPU and artificial intelligence capabilities compared to the PS5. Therefore, this “Pro” model will be much more powerful than the standard PS5, but it will basically be a beefed-up PS5, not a next-generation console.
Sony reminds us that in the previous PS4 example, 20% of PS4 owners bought a PS4 Pro by paying $400 at launch. However, we do not know for now whether the same rate will be valid for the $ 700 PS5 Pro.
On the other hand, the number of games exclusive to PS5 Pro is still very small. However, it is emphasized that the new PS5 Pro will offer game quality at the level of high-end gaming PCs.
