Kaspersky, which was targeted by the United States in the past and banned for use in government institutions for alleged cyber spying, has been the subject of an interesting cyber attack. Moreover, without even fully understanding where the attack came from.

What is Operation Triangulation?

Kaspersky, which has been tracking cyber attacks around the world and trying to identify threats, has suffered a very interesting cyber attack. This attack, which targeted iPhones of middle and senior management, took the company by surprise.

In this attack, called Operation Triangulation, attackers send an invisible message via iMessage. The malware in this message is silently installed on the system. It then engages in specific functions such as listening to microphones, location tracking, capturing images from chat messages, monitoring the user’s behavior. For this, the user does not need any interaction.

Earlier in the year, Kaspersky noticed abnormal data output from Apple devices, thanks to the KUMA tracking platform. In the researches, it was understood that a mysterious software was installed on iPhone devices. In addition, it has been seen that these devices are also prevented from being able to update.

Due to the closed iOS ecosystem, it is not possible to detect and destroy this software with standard tools. A backup image needs to be scanned with special tools and then uploaded. Kaspersky is still investigating the nature of the malware and is warning other institutions of the attack.
