Things are going well for AMD, which has made big gains in the server space and consumer-grade processor market. The firm has passed a historic milestone for CPU market share. On the other hand, Intel’s decline continues and this benefits AMD.AMD’s market share exceeds 30 percent
According to a recent report from Mercury Research, AMD currently has a 31.3 percent share of the x86 processor market. In the fourth quarter of 2021, AMD had a 28.5 percent market share. On the other hand, Intel’s market share in the relevant period decreased from 71.5 percent to 68.7 percent, but the blue team still holds the lion’s share.
Behind this success of AMD is the server side and therefore the EPYC processors. On the server side, AMD increased its market share from 4.2 percent in 2018 to 17.6 percent by the end of 2022. On the desktop consumer side, Ryzen processors reached 18.6 percent. Both quarterly and year-on-year increases continue here as well.Driving force EPYC processors
On the other hand, the research organization also pointed out that both Intel and AMD have seen the largest shipment decline in over 30 years. Both companies reported losses in their latest financial reports. Total CPU shipments are down 34 percent year-on-year and 19 percent quarterly. On the revenue side, there are 21 percent and 19 percent declines on an annual and quarterly basis, respectively. But there’s one thing to underline, these revenues are higher than any other year when we factor out the record-breaking demand for 2020 and 2021.
AMD’s EPYC and Instinct products are expected to increase the company’s market share to well over 30 percent by the end of this year. Intel will try to give its answer with the latest Sapphire Rapids Xeon processors.
