Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA), a technology for controlling the speed of vehicles, will be mandatory for all new vehicles sold on the European market from July 2024. The system will be able to control the speed of the vehicle as well as warn the driver of speed limits.

By making this system mandatory, the protection of vehicles from cyber risks will also come to the fore. Making a statement on the subject, Evgeniya Ponomareva, Head of Global Cooperations of KasperskyOS Business Unit, states that thanks to this system, cybersecurity will become an integral part of the automotive industry.

Intelligent speed assist will be mandatory in 2024

Research into the cybersecurity of connected vehicles, including the recently discovered vulnerability at Tesla, continues to be discovered by attackers and researchers.

The security risks affecting ISA arise when the vehicle is connected to external systems, such as an external cloud that uploads data according to speed limits, or any other electronic control unit of the vehicle.

Depending on the electrical/electronic (E/E) architecture, attackers can access systems through external communication channels or using a chain of vulnerabilities in other electronic control units connected to a public network.

Evgeniya Ponomareva, KasperskyOS Business Unit Global Partners Manager, said;

“Fortunately, developing these systems with cybersecurity in mind has now become a necessity. The ISA is built in accordance with both the requirements of ISO 262626, which regulates functional security at the software level, and general automotive industry standards on cybersecurity based on mandatory certification, including UNECE regulations UN R155, R156 and ISO21434.

The risk assessment of the system should also be made according to these requirements and the vehicle systems should be safe from design. That is, security mechanisms should be implemented during the development phase. From June 2024, the sale of new vehicles without a cybersecurity certificate will be banned in the EU.

This will make cybersecurity an integral part of the automotive industry. A dedicated security platform for the development of electronic units can help automakers meet their requirements.”
