Today, artificial intelligence investments of manufacturers such as Nvidia, Intel and Qualcomm have gained momentum. So much so that among these names, Intel confirmed that Meteor Lake processors will have a special VPU for artificial intelligence acceleration. Today, the CPU giant has clarified some details of Meteor Lake processors as part of the Computex 2023 event.

Meteor Lake processors in detail

For those who don’t know, Meteor Lake processors will be Intel’s first consumer CPU with Forveros 3D Packaging technology. In this context, different production processes between layers can be used in processors that will host layers such as the computing unit, SOC-LP unit and GPU unit. The most important of these will be the VPU (AI Engine), which is one of the key components of Meteor Lake.

Some of the key features of Meteor Lake CPUs, according to Intel

  • Next generation power management
  • New Onboard Intel Arc graphics
  • New integrated AI Engine (VPU)

The Neural VPU will be a custom AI engine integrated into the chip. When additional accelerators in the GPU are added to this development, it is expected to provide a huge increase in performance and application experience. The advantages of Forveros 3D Packaging technology and VPU are as follows:

  • Advanced Sound Effects
  • Creator and Game Effects
  • Artificial Intelligence Assistants (Microsoft 365 Copilot)
  • Bringing AI natively to client machines.
  • AI Computing Required for Developments GOPS
  • Artificial Intelligence Computing Required for Large Language Models (TOPS) – ChatGPT
As part of Computex 2023, Intel also shared information on the VPU performance of Meteor Lake processors. Blur rendering with the VPU at this point not only has better quality, but also consumes 1/5th less power. There’s also a huge speed boost compared to the time taken on a standard CPU or iGPU.

In addition to the Neural VPU, Intel also shed light on the Arc Alchemist “Xe-LPG” GPUs that will accompany the Meteor Lake processors. Accordingly, the new GPUs, DX12 Ultimate, Ray Tracing and XeSS support, such as the technologies we encounter in Arc graphics cards. Intel Meteor Lake processors are expected to be introduced in the third quarter (August-September) of 2023. We expect more details to be shared in the coming days.
