Today, many technological devices, including smartphones, have started to support the AV1 format, which provides up to 50 percent higher performance and efficiency than the current H.264 video format. Now, in a recent update shared by Intel developers, it has been confirmed that the upcoming Meteor Lake processors will offer AV1 support.

Meteor Lake processors come with AV1 Encode and Decode Support

The Meteor Lake architecture, which will be the successor to the current Raptor Lake, will be built on 7nm process technology with built-in Xe-LPG integrated graphics. According to the reports, on-chip Xe² graphics architecture, low-power AV1 encoding, integrated HDMI 2.1, DP ports, enhanced dual low-power eDP 1.4b support will be presented to users. However, it should be noted that these leaks cover the mobile side.

Recent leaks say that Intel may turn to Raptor Lake refresh instead of Raptor Lake desktop processors in its future plans. For this reason, it has not yet been confirmed whether the desktop versions will have new features.

In addition, the AV1 decoding and encoding support that Meteor Lake will bring could accelerate the adoption of the new video format by popular streaming services such as Netflix, Disney+ and Amazon Prime. Because the AV1 format, including new smart TVs and phones, will now be supported by AMD RDNA3, NVIDIA Ada Lovelace and Intel Alchemist architectures.
