Intel not only revealed many details about its future consumer products at its Innovation 2023 event this week, but also introduced a 288-core CPU as part of its ‘Sierra Forest’ series for high-density servers. The company also confirmed that the Sierra Forest, Granite Rapids and Clearwater Forest families will be compatible with the new Birch Stream platform, which includes LGA 4710 and LGA 7529 sockets.

The 288-core CPU will be a dual-processor model with 144 cores on each die, for a total of 288 cores and 288 threads. It will compete with AMD’s 128 Zen 4C-core EPYC Bergamo CPUs and Ampere’s 192-core AmpereOne processors announced earlier this year. Tom’s Hardware speculates that Intel may even release a 432-core three-chip SKU, but whether that will be technologically possible remains to be seen.

Intel also confirmed that the 5th generation Xeon family, codenamed ‘Emerald Rapids’, will be released on December 14. It will be compatible with the existing Eagle Stream platform and offer some upgrades over its predecessor. According to Intel, the new chips will come with faster memory support and provide significant performance increases compared to the previous generation at the same power consumption.

Another notable announcement from Intel was its increasing focus on artificial intelligence applications. The company stated that a supercomputer designed for AI tasks will be built entirely using Xeon processors and 4,000 Gaudi2 AI hardware accelerators. The primary customer for this machine will be Stability AI, an AI-focused visual art startup responsible for the generative AI model known as Stable Diffusion.

Intel also touched on consumer products during the event, including a confirmed launch date for its Meteor Lake CPU series. Moreover, the company has given some details about the upcoming processor generations, which include Arrow Lake, Lunar Lake, and Panther Lake. Meteor Lake will come with the first ‘Core Ultra’ chipsets, which are scheduled to be released on December 14. The chipmaker claims that Meteor Lake represents the most significant architectural shift in the company’s processor design in the last four decades and is expected to deliver noticeable performance and efficiency improvements over its predecessors.

Arrow Lake is expected to launch in the second half of 2024, while Lunar Lake is expected to arrive by 2024-25. Finally, there is Panther Lake, which is scheduled to be released in 2025. So we will see new processors from Intel every year.
