Instagram is now preparing to tackle exactly this situation.
Instagram has announced a new feature for its mobile app that will inform people about any technical issues the service may encounter. The social network says that if there is an outage, a notification will appear in the user’s activity stream, preventing widespread confusion.

Instagram will first test this alert and notification system in the US for a few months and will make it available in other markets if successful. Also, the feature will remain exclusive to iOS for a while. It is not yet clear whether Facebook and WhatsApp will receive a similar warning system.
