After starting small with paid memberships for content developers earlier this year, Instagram has announced that it plans to expand the experience with more features to better compete with Twitter. Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri said in a video that the platform aims to be the best online option for developers to make a living, and that the new plugins are a direct result of feedback from creators who participated in the early stages of subscriptions.

Perhaps the most important of the new features is the ability to publish stream posts in a way that is visible only to members. Developers were able to do this for stories before, but will now be able to offer access to exclusive traditional Instagram feed posts for their paying supporters. Mosseri said this is one of the most requested features. There will be a new “members home” tab on their developer profile, where members will be able to filter their private photos and Reels posts.

Membership fees range from $0.99 to $99.99, and member profiles earn a purple badge to show they support a developer or influencer. In addition to stories and stream posts, developers will also be able to launch members-only live streams. Thanks to another feature announced today, they will be able to chat with up to 30 members at the same time via group DM.

While Instagram has gradually improved its membership system and opened it up to “tens of thousands” of developers in the US, Mosseri admits the company has much more to do.

The company is currently working on making large-scale changes and innovations on the Instagram application. Mosseri states that it will probably be months before the new design reaches everyone, and Instagram is making the necessary changes, especially based on feedback from photographers, so that the new, video-optimized feed does not worsen the presentation of photos…
