Popular social media platform Instagram is facing a new scandal. Earlier this month, Instagram head Adam Mosseri moved to London. Meta, the parent company of the platform, allegedly wants to recruit more workers to its London offices. As a result, however, workers in London will be paid less than their San Francisco counterparts.

Instagram’s employees in London are getting less pay

Earlier this month, Instagram head Adam Mosseri moved to London. According to a spokesperson from parent company Meta, this transfer of Mosseri is due to Mosseri’s ‘global nature’. In addition, the spokesperson noted that London is the company’s largest engineering center outside the US. He also said that he has a special Instagram team.

Allegedly, Mosseri wants to recruit more staff to its London offices. Even so, any staff hired in London faces the prospect of being paid less than their San Francisco counterparts.

Reasons for this pay disparity include a higher cost of living paired with an exaggerated demand for technologists in the US. However, looking at the Meta overall, it turns out that San Francisco-based workers make more money.

Meta’s average product manager in London earns a salary of $146,605, according to data from an employee review site. According to the same data, product designers at the company also earn an average salary of $115,150 per year. Three product managers who started in San Francisco last year were paid between $180,000 and $210. A product designer starting in 2022 earned a base salary of $185,792, according to workforce data.

Chris Abbass, head of Talentful, a recruiting service for tech companies based in London and San Francisco, said wage disparity is not unusual. “Inflation and demand for technologists are driving up salaries in all geographies. But there is still a big difference between London and San Francisco.”

Cost of living also plays an important role in wage inequality. San Francisco has become the 14th most expensive city in the world. London is the 40th most expensive city in terms of cost of living. In addition, even locals say they need $1.7 million to be financially comfortable in San Francisco. He claims you need $5.1 million to become rich.
