Instagram is testing a new way to filter out nudity messages sent via direct messages. The firm confirmed reports on the development that app researcher Alessandro Paluzzi published earlier this week. The footage showed that Instagram was working on technology that would cover up photos that could contain nudity. But Instagram itself will not be able to access these photos.

Instagram stated that this feature is still in development and testing has not started.

“We are developing a set of optional user controls to help protect people from unwanted private messages such as nudity photos,” Meta spokesperson Liz Fernandez said. “This technology does not allow Meta to see or share users’ private messages. We are working closely with experts to ensure that these new features give people control over the messages they receive while protecting their privacy.”

Screenshots of the feature posted by Paluzzi show that Instagram will only process images for this feature on the respective device, so nothing is sent to their servers. You can also choose to see the photo if you think it’s from a trusted person. When the feature becomes widely available, it will be an optional setting for users who want to extract messages containing nude photos.
