Only a quarter of young people get their news from the BBC
According to research by Ofcom, in 2022 about three out of 10 young people used Instagram as their news source. 28 percent used TikTok and YouTube. According to the online survey, only a quarter of young people get their news from traditional news outlets BBC One and BBC Two.
BBC One is still the most used news source among adults in the UK. However, a decrease of 6% was observed this year.
TikTok, an editorial social media platform, saw the biggest increase, with an estimated 3.9 million British adults turning to the app. Half of TikTok’s news users are between the ages of 16 and 24.
Despite falling numbers, television news remains the most trusted news source for 71 percent of UK adults, with only 35 percent trusting news on social media. Use of print and online newspapers also fell from 51 percent to 38 percent in 2018.
