Instagram seems to be working on new notifications that will determine what role AI plays in content creation on its platform.
App researcher Alessandro Paluzzi, who revealed the new Instagram features before they are officially announced or published, shared a screenshot of a page in the Instagram app that shows the content was created or edited with artificial intelligence.

This development comes shortly after Meta, along with other major AI players such as Google, Microsoft and OpenAI, made a commitment to the White House on responsible development of AI. One of the commitments included investing in cybersecurity and discrimination research, as well as developing a watermarking system to notify users when content was produced by artificial intelligence.
It’s unclear exactly how automated Instagram’s tagging system will be and how much it will trust users to report when artificial intelligence is used to create or edit an image. However, the inclusion of “Meta said” suggests that at least in some cases, the tech firm will proactively enforce the statement rather than relying on users’ honesty.
While still in its infancy, earlier this year when a photo of the Pope in a puffy jacket went viral on social media, we got a glimpse of what artificial intelligence-generated fake news might look like. The relatively harmless image in this case was eventually refuted, but when applied to satellite imagery and political photography it was taken as a warning that simple tools now exist to spread dangerous false information.
