Instagram has made an unexpected decision for its standalone video app IGTV. It has announced that it will no longer support the application. Launched in 2018, IGTV was expected to play an important role in the social media platform’s competition with YouTube.

While it is possible to broadcast horizontal videos of up to 1 minute in Instagram’s main application; Up to 15 minutes long vertical format videos could be shared on IGTV with file size up to 650 MB. In the desktop version, this time was longer, 1 hour long videos were supported. In this respect, it made up for the important deficiency in Instagram.

Instagram will no longer support IGTV app

Most users probably don’t even realize it, Instagram has a standalone IGTV app. This application, which can be installed from the App Store and Google Play Store, will no longer be supported, according to the statement of the social media company. As part of our efforts to make video discovery and creation as simple as possible, Instagram will no longer support our standalone app for IGTV. Instead, we’ll focus on having all the videos in the main Instagram app.

Of course, ending IGTV support doesn’t mean that Instagram is restricting video sharing or has plans to do so. On the contrary, CEO Adam Mosseri said in a tweet he shared last year that Instagram is no longer a simple photo sharing application and pointed out that they continue to develop features such as Reels and Stories.

Months ago, IGTV was unplugged

Instagram announced in October that it has merged IGTV and streaming standard videos into a single format called “Instagram Video”. The company has also added a tab to users’ profile with all the videos they’ve shared (except Reals). In this tab, your followers can see the videos you share on the platform, including IGTV.
