According to official data, Reels, which makes up 20 percent of the total time spent by Instagram users in the application, has been criticized for its ‘short time’ since the day it was introduced. Reels time, which allowed uploading 15-second videos in the first place, gradually increased to 1 minute within two years.
With more than 1 billion monthly users, Instagram, one of TikTok’s biggest competitors, currently allows 15, 30 and 60 second videos to be shared in the Reels section. On TikTok, 3-minute videos can already be shared. Continuing to work to catch up with its rival, Meta extended the duration of Instagram Reels by 30 seconds.
Instagram Reels duration was 1.5 minutes
Social media expert Matt Navarra stated that the duration of Instagram Reels increased to 90 seconds, ie 1.5 minutes, with his post on his Twitter account. Although there is no official statement from Instagram on the subject, the screenshot shared by a social media user confirmed the sharing of Navarra.
It’s no surprise that the 90 second option was added to Instagram. Because mobile application developer Alessandro Paluzzi revealed in February that Instagram Reels video duration would increase to 1.5 minutes, in line with his reverse engineering investigations. The feature went live months later, as expected.
Google, which has replaced YouTube Shorts in the ‘short-form video’ competition, allows videos of up to 60 seconds to be shared. TikTok, which operates within ByteDance, is preparing to increase this time up to 10 minutes. On the other hand, Meta brought the Instagram Reels feature to Facebook in the past months.
Of course, in line with Meta’s policy of integrating applications with each other, Instagram Reels videos can be optionally shared on Facebook. Moreover, you do not need a Facebook account for this, just accept the option “Allow my video to be recommended”.
