Instagram head Adam Mosseri made an announcement about platform photos on his weekly Ask Me Everything program. In his statement, he said that they are preparing to enter a new testing period for the photos to be compatible with full-screen Reels. In addition, Mosseri confirmed that they will begin testing ultra-long 9:16 photos ‘in a week or two’.
“You can have long videos, but you can’t have long photos on Instagram. So we thought maybe we should make sure we treat both equally.”
The platform’s step to test 9:16 photos was not welcomed by some photographers. This is because the photos have a strange appearance. Instagram has been working on a TikTok-like full-screen experience for its users for a long time. In addition, the company thinks this will help ensure a smoother flow.
With this thought, the company’s new target was on photographs. Currently, Instagram highlights around 4:5 when displaying cropped vertical images. Longer photos, however, will fill the entire screen when navigating the app feed.
