A new copyright infringement lawsuit has been filed against social media giant Meta. Epidemic Sound, which provides copyrighted music, claimed that 94 percent of the music in Meta’s library is unlicensed. It was stated that the music used on Facebook and Instagram platforms was violated.

Meta sued for music theft

An audio/music company called Epidemic Sound has filed a copyright lawsuit against Meta for $142 million. Epidemic Sound, which has more than 35 thousand music and more than 90 thousand sound effects in its library, said that the social media giant uses these music without a license.

The licensing company, which said that it was not even aware that Meta was infringing on the music rights, stated that 94 percent of the sounds in the Meta library were used as stolen.

Stating that there is music theft on Facebook and Instagram social media platforms, Epidemic stated that he aimed to stop this theft, which was carried out “intentionally and brazenly”.

Epidemic claimed that the songs in millions of videos on Meta platforms, especially Reels dance videos, are used without a license. According to the lawsuit, more than 50 thousand sound effects and 30 thousand music are uploaded to royalty-free Instagram in just one day.

Epidemic Sound gives its creators the right to use copyrighted music with a monthly subscription of 9 euros. Users who subscribe to the platform; can use these music on YouTube, Facebook, TikTok, Instagram and Twitch.
