Influenza Virus Creates ‘Hybrid Virus’ With Another Virus

Scientists have determined that the flu and RSV virus, which cause upper respiratory tract disease, can combine and act together. The hybrid virus causes a more severe infection than the regular flu.

A remarkable statement came from scientists these days, when there is an increase in upper respiratory diseases with the cooling of the weather. Experts announced that viruses that cause upper respiratory tract diseases combine to form a hybrid structure. Pablo Murcia, the scientist who discovered this hybrid virus, said, “This kind of hybrid virus has never been described before.” used his statements.

When we say upper respiratory tract diseases, the first discomfort that comes to mind is the flu (Influenza A). However, the flu virus is not the only structure that causes respiratory diseases. So much so that the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) also causes disease and is at least as contagious as the flu. The reason why there is more flu talk in the community is that RSV mostly affects babies. Recent research has revealed that these two viruses come together and cooperate.

Hybrid virus causes more severe infection!

Scientists, who made a detailed study of the hybrid virus, which is a combination of the flu and RSV, sent the viruses to the lung cells both separately and as a hybrid. As a result of the research, it was seen that the hybrid virus caused a more severe infection. So much so that the influenza A virus was taking advantage of RSV in this process and bypassing the immune system. This increased the rate of progression to the lungs and aggravated the disease.

Scientists say it is important that viruses from different families, which differ in both genome and outer protein, come together to form a hybrid structure. Because after this discovery, there is a need for brand new studies on viruses. Researchers state that there may be other hybrid viruses that have not yet been discovered, and that if these are detected, new treatments for hybrid viruses may be sought.
