Intel will produce a trillion-transistor processor by 2030
Intel has created its long-term plan to take its place in the industry where TSMC and Samsung share the top. The company has set itself an unbelievable goal. Intel announced at IEDM 2022 (International Electron Devices Meeting) that it will produce a trillion-transistor processor by 2030.
If we approach the issue from a technical point of view, the more transistors in a processor, the higher its efficiency. It would be correct to compare it with today’s in order to fully understand the magnitude of this target of Intel. For example, A16 Bionic, which powers the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, has TSMC’s 4nm technology and uses nearly 16 billion transistors.
On the other hand, Samsung and TSMC, which are currently the leading processor manufacturers, also have some long-term plans. Both companies may introduce processors with 2nm technology in the coming years. In addition, TSMC aims to produce 1.2nm by 2027. The company has already given a date for 3nm processors.
3nm processors are on TSMC’s website under the name N3. The content also includes an information sheet compared to 5nm technology. Content says 3nm technology will offer up to 70 percent logic density gain and up to 15 percent speed improvement over 5nm technology at the same power. Morris Chang, the founder of TSMC, said that the company will begin production of 3nm processors at its factory in Arizona in 2024.
