Although smartphone technology continues to develop rapidly, the development of batteries used by phones is happening at a turtle’s pace. And we don’t see big improvements in battery life as a result. But with the Samsung Galaxy S24 we can see the most important step so far.

South Korean news site TheElec claims that Samsung SDI (Samsung’s battery manufacturing division) is working with two unnamed Chinese companies to develop batteries for smartphones and tablets, similar to those used in electric vehicles. This type of battery Samsung SDI is currently producing for electric cars uses a stacked design, which means that the components are stacked on top of each other rather than coiled up. Stacked batteries bring components together more tightly, resulting in increased energy density.

As a result, it is possible to fit around 10% more capacity in the same space. This way, Samsung, for example, could theoretically fit a 5,500mAh battery into the space currently occupied by a 5,000mAh battery, which is a pretty significant difference.

Of course, the company could instead choose to keep the capacities the same and reduce the size of its batteries, allowing the phones to be smaller or to leave more room for other components. In other words, all these do not guarantee that such an innovation will appear in the final product.

It’s not clear when we’ll see these batteries in phones for the first time, but the Samsung Galaxy S24 or Samsung Galaxy S25 series phones will be prominent candidates, depending on how much they’ve already been developed.

SamMobile says that this battery technology is claimed to be used in the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, but it is not mentioned in the same news it refers to. Therefore, it is unclear where they got this information from.
