In the first month of the year, the record was broken in battery -powered power storage
Global Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) showed a historical increase in January 2025. London -based analysis company Rho Motion reported that a total of 13.6 GWh new energy storage capacity was commissioned in the first month of the year. RHO Motion says that the capacity added in January 2025 means a 94 percent rise compared to January 2024.

China is at the summit again

Not surprisingly, about two -thirds of the new BESS projects in January were commissioned in China. In the country, projects with a total capacity of 3.9 GW/9,52 GWh were introduced, while a large -scale system of 1.2 GWh was commissioned in Hubei province. In addition, three vanadium flow batteries with a capacity of 90 MWh as the only energy storage technology other than lithium ion were also established in China.

Another remarkable development after China took place in Saudi Arabia. One of the largest projects other than China was implemented by commissioning a BESS with a capacity of 2 GWh in the country.

In Europe, only 240 MW/470 MWh was commissioned in January. This figure corresponds only to 3.5 %of global distribution and shows that the continent is behind in BESS investments.

In the United States, 61 %of the scheduled battery energy storage projects in the United States are located in California and Texas. On the other hand, Wisconsin, Oregon, Minnesota, Idaho, Indiana and New Mexico states are expected to establish a total capacity of 9 GWH.
