This time, Bert Huebert developed the Googerteller utility that beeps every time the computer accesses Google’s servers, and my app almost never shuts up.
Recent update of Windows 10 causes sound problems
Googerteller works using a list of IP addresses published by Google that are associated with many Google services but not Google Cloud. Every time your computer connects to one of these IP addresses, whether you’re using a program or browsing the web, you hear a beep.
Almost every click goes to Google
In Hubert’s first demo video, you’ll notice that after each keystroke, Chrome’s address bar beeps and the browser sends requests for autocomplete suggestions. When navigating the Dutch government job postings website, nearly every click on the page, including the drop-down menus, links to Google, resulting in a beep.
Some of these links to Google may be due to Chrome’s tight integration with Google services, but Hubert’s tests showed that data is often transferred to Google servers in the Firefox web browser as well.
The Googerteller app is free and currently only works with Linux-based operating systems (Debian, Ubuntu, Arch, Fedora, etc.).
