Apple, one of the most valuable companies in the world, continues to make moves to expand its business area. The company announced in 2014 that they wanted to produce autonomous vehicles under its own brand. At that time, this news had a great impact on the world agenda. However, the statement made immediately after was that they did not have the necessary equipment to manufacture such a vehicle.
For this reason, a long study was carried out for the highly anticipated vehicle. It’s finally over. The Apple Car, which has been developed for years, will leave the factory in 2024. Little is known about the vehicle, other than that it will run entirely on electricity and the battery will be based on a technology called nanocell. However, Apple’s latest transfer confirmed one more feature.
Apple hires Tesla’s autopilot software director
Although there were news from time to time, Apple was conducting its work on automobiles in secret. One of the company’s biggest competitors for the vehicle, which is expected to be electric and autonomous, is Tesla. But Apple made a big transfer from its tough rival. The company has hired Christopher CJ Moore, Tesla’s director of autopilot software.
Moore had previously disagreed with Elon Musk. The software director said 6 months ago that Musk had exaggerated the timeline planned for the production of the autonomous vehicle. In his statement, Moore said his statements about the imminent arrival of Level 5 automated driving do not match the engineering reality.
Musk says the Telsa tool can operate with zero human intervention. However, the vehicle has technology that requires a certain level of steering intervention from the driver, which is defined as Level 2 for now. Different opinions on this matter went to the crossroads for Moore and Tesla. In addition to Moore, Apple added two engineers working at Mercedes for the automobile project in the past months.
Apple started working on an automobile called Project Titan in 2014. Although it carries out clandestine work, the company is showing the developments in the project with the test drive area it rented in Arizona last month. It also collaborates with companies such as Apple, Hanwha and LG Electronics. The company seems to be making quite a splash in this area in the coming years.
