Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK) made a statement regarding the productions on television channels. In the statements, which stated that the complaints have increased recently, it was underlined that attention should be paid to the publications of violent content. The Board stated that these statements apply not only to TV series and movies, but also to news broadcasts.
In the statements where important warnings were made such as “Violence, which has become normal and widespread through television, is a phenomenon that threatens the social structure.”
Here is the statement made by RTÜK
“In the content analyzes made by the professionals working in our Supreme Council, the news topics called ‘third page news’ in the newspapers are also prominent in the television news, most of the news bulletins are compiled from the news coming to the ‘WhatsApp Hotline’ and violent images and sounds appear on the screens too much. has been detected.
Broadcasts with violent content are not only limited to news bulletins, but unfortunately, violent images are also included in dramatic productions. All kinds of violence, from physical violence to psychological violence, from economic violence to sexual violence, are shown on different channels and in different forms from time to time. We regret to see that in direct proportion to the increase in broadcasts containing violence on the screens, unfortunately, the number of women who are exposed to violence and die as a result of violence is increasing in our country. As a reflection of these broadcasting policies, violence against children and animals also tends to increase.
We all know that violent broadcasts are made by media service providers, but the negative consequences of such broadcasts are ignored, and broadcasting policies implemented by media service providers cause many individual and social problems. It is accepted by researchers that modeling or social learning processes play a fundamental role in the handling of violent images in the media. Aggressive behaviors can be learned through the media, especially such experiences at an early age are considered to have strong negative effects on children’s developmental learning processes and social normalization. Television also functions as a psychological stimulus that can reveal hidden and not yet stimulated behaviors. On the other hand, children who are exposed to violent and fearful images may lose the perception that the world is a safe place and that people are safe; It can prepare the ground for experiencing feelings of helplessness and bringing a negative, pessimistic perspective to people.
In order to prevent such broadcasts, important responsibilities fall on our Supreme Council, written and audiovisual media organizations, news agencies, relevant public institutions and organizations, universities, professional press organizations and non-governmental organizations. Although it is not sufficient on its own in terms of a solution against violence, the Radio and Television Supreme Council acts in a way that is not limited to the method of punishment in order to purify the screens from violence in terms of its own legal responsibility. It is a known fact that our Supreme Council fights all kinds of violence, especially against women, the powerless and disadvantaged groups. In this context, it is obvious that not only violence, but also the social elements that fuel violence should be cleared from television screens. “
