The most important new feature of Android 12 is to change the operating system’s interface with colors, icons, icon shapes, etc. It is thought to be a “Material You” design that allows for appearance customizations such as However, it seems that many phones will not be able to use this feature when they receive the Android 12 update.

In a briefing on ColorOS 12, a version of Android 12 used for Oppo phones and adapted by Oppo from Google’s original software, a member of the software team said that Material You is not part of the Android Open Source Project (AOSP).

Oppo also said in a statement, “It seems that Material You Android 12 does not come in the open source project, so it cannot be used by OEM manufacturers. We will wait and see when Google will open the code.”

The Android Open Source Project is a repository where Google uploads code for Android versions. ColorOS 12 will arrive with the Oppo Find X3 Pro at the end of the year and will be active for most of the brand’s other new phones in 2022. Oppo also stated that a newer version of ColorOS 12 with Material You could arrive in early 2022.

Some phone brands are planning to roll out Android 12 upgrades towards the end of the year, but many have yet to set a roadmap, indicating that the newest version of Google’s operating system will arrive in a small number of phones in the first place.

Even then, programmers will have to make an effort to adapt Material You to be suitable for the particular Android update and make it compatible with existing systems on the phone. Considering that Material You is bringing a system-wide redesign to apps and menus, this will probably take some time.
