Disney and IMAX have signed a collaboration that will allow Marvel movies broadcast on Disney Plus to be watched in IMAX’s Expanded Aspect Ratio format. Accordingly, Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings, which will be released on the platform that day as included in the 12 Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movies that can be watched on Disney Plus, will be upgraded to IMAX Enhanced as of November 12.
While IMAX generally uses the 1.43:1 frame format, IMAX’s Expanded Aspect Ratio is 1.90:1, which is relatively close to the 16:9 ratio used in televisions. Marvel movies, on the other hand, often have wider aspect ratios; however, many of these films in IMAX theaters feature 1.90:1 sequences shot with IMAX certified cameras to provide a longer view, which is exactly what Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame were shot in.
It will be possible to see parts of the scenes that we normally cannot see
For example, Black Widow, one of the recent Marvel movies, has 22 minutes of IMAX Expanded Aspect Ratio footage. After this collaboration, these scenes we watched on Disney Plus will occupy more space on our television screen. In other words, the black parts on the sides of the screen will now be smaller and will not be as noticeable as before. IMAX Enhanced is expected to include many other features later on.
