If you have been using the same Android phone or tablet for many years, it would be beneficial to prepare to say goodbye to the Google Calendar application. The app is ending support for devices without Android 8 or newer.
As reported by Android Police, the TheSpAndroid team spotted code and an image in the latest version of Google Calendar for Android that informs a user that “your current Android version is no longer supported.”
This code contains a flag labeled “Unsupported Operating System__enabled”, indicating that the application is now only supported on Android 8 (Oreo) and newer versions. However, for now, this code does not seem to be activated.
After the code is activated, if you try to run the Google Calendar application on a device older than Android 8, you will see a message on the screen telling you to upgrade to the new version. However, the app will likely still be available via the mobile web browser on these phones and tablets.
2.12% of Android devices worldwide are running Android 7 or Android 7.1, and 3.42% are running an older version, StatCounter reported. So overall, approximately 1 in 20 phones and tablets will be affected by this discontinuation of support. Some of these older devices will be eligible for an upgrade to newer Android versions, but if you have a device that isn’t, it may be time to consider investing in a new device.
