The relationship between what we see in our dreams and our emotional state and mental health has long been under the scrutiny of the scientific world. A new study by scientists from the University of Dusseldorf also focused on this issue. The study suggested that what people with anxiety disorders see in their dreams may differ significantly from those in healthy individuals.
Along with this fact, the scientists also identified three themes that are more common in the dreams of anxiety sufferers. According to scientists, dreaming about your ex, having more emotionally intense dreams and seeing high-speed images may indicate that you have anxiety.

In the study, which was carried out with the participation of 38 anxiety patients and 38 healthy individuals, the volunteers’ dream diaries, one-to-one dream analyzes and their answers to the questionnaires were compared with each other. The conditions that differ in anxiety patients compared to healthy individuals are explained as follows:
- Dreaming of being chased, being physically attacked, freezing from fear, death of loved ones, and plane crash.
- Seeing less positive events and situations, such as fewer friendly interactions or success.
- Include less characters, places, travel, transportation and verbal communication.
- Experiencing more positive emotions such as anger, fear, anxiety and sadness, and less positive emotions such as happiness.
Scientists also touched on the small sample size in their study. It was reported that the participants with anxiety consisted of patients with the most common anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder and panic disorder. He reported that patients with specific phobias, separation anxiety disorder and agoraphobia are underrepresented, so more research can be conducted with more participants on this subject.
